Pouwhirinaki is a lead role that encompasses responsibility in growing and developing work and learning programs for Māori within our rohe/area. This includes culturally responsive practices to better serve and empower Māori students and their whānau as well as develop programs that consist of specific project initiatives through a cultural lens.

Pouwhirinaki role embraces tīkanga guidance, advice, expertise, and leadership to work colleagues to ensure appropriate planning and delivery for ākonga, whānau, kura, iwi, hapori (community), other interprofessional services and stakeholders.  This role hono (links) us with our He Pikorua ūara (values), Urūnga tu and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Additional mahi includes strategic planning and working alongside our local iwi Te Kawerau ā Maki, Maata Waka, Māori providers of education and other social services including wider community stakeholders to deliver on project outcomes. Specific emphasis is on achieving and maintaining the following key actions:

  • the interfacing of strategic relationships/roles between iwi Māori & the wider community;
  • providing advice on strategic direction and training obligations with respect to te iwi Māori and cultural safety.
